A man of the land, he has always lived and worked on his farm. The land passed down for generations. Years before our story, Bernie became estranged from his daughter. His guilt manifests in a vow of silence after his daughter's death. But still, he continues to work the land, when Elsie arrives his world is turned upside down and he must begin to process his grief and accept the responsibility of fatherhood once more.
