Story Synopsis
The Rising Sun follows a group of old men who love to smoke, drink and gamble. Their doctors don't like their habits and neither do their families so they have got to find a place to do it in private. It just so happens that their old local, where they would drink as younger men, has now been abandoned giving them the perfect place to relive their glory days.
These poker nights have been a regular routine for the men at the point we join them in the film. What is different this time, however, is that our main character, John, suffers a stroke right at the moment he is dealt a royal flush in a high stakes game.
John decides, with his now sagging poker face, to see out the game and conceal his condition from the group.

John is the film's main protagonist. He's in denial that he and his friends are growing older and wants to relive his youth, which is why he attends The Rising Sun. John enjoys spending time with his friends, away from his responsibilities. This behaviour is something that is regularly disputed by his family who are worried about his health. But they have largely come to accept it as routine. The feeling of nostalgia is what John thrives off, he always reverts to his younger habits and attitudes, which make him an even tempered, laid back guy to be around. He enjoys drinking, smoking, and being social.
